State of INFOCOM September 2017

Greetings Marines,

I have almost completely recovered from the hurricane.  The last thing to get repaired in my washer. I guess it took a power surge and the main board needs to be replaced.  The good news is it is still under warranty the bad news is, it took over a week to get the replacement part.  I hope to have this resolved by the end of the week.  Fingers crossed.

It never fails, the best laid plans.  I was hoping I would have a decision on the Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck Extra editor position by now but the storm has push that out for a couple more weeks.  I will be making a decision as soon as I can.

The deployment for the new SFMCA website was also delayed.  My testing isn’t completed but once it is, I’ll let everyone know when the new deployment date will be.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM August 2017

Greetings Marines,

I had a great time at IC this year, it was great seeing old friends and meeting some new ones.  My thanks to the organizers and staff of the IC, thanks for your efforts.

Now that the IC is behind us I will be making a decision on the Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck Extra editor position soon.

As I mentioned at the International Muster, the new SFMC WordPress site it is up and running.  All the data from the old site is on the new site and all functions have been transferred.  We will be making improvements and adding new content to the site as we go along.

I have the new WordPress STARFLEET Marine Corps Academy site ready to deploy.  I plan to launch this new site in September sometime between the 16th-23rd.  I have some final testing to complete before then.  It has been suggested that the SFMCA go with a Moodle site like the SFI Academy has.  As I have the WordPress site ready, this will be the new platform for now.  If at some point TRACOM would like to start developing a new Moodle site I will give them all the assistance I can. The decision will be theirs to make.

After the SFMCA site has been deployed, I will start looking at a new Quarter Master site.  I’m not sure what platform I will use yet.  I will have to do some research and testing before making that decision.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

Greetings Marines,

Sorry for the delay in announcing the new Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck Extra editor position.  I’ve been tie up with getting the new SFMC website up and running.  I hope I can get the announcement made after IC.

Speaking of the new SFMC WordPress site it is up and running.  All the basics are there, we wanted to get the new site up to resolve some issues I had previous mentioned.  We not finished yet, will be making improvements as we go along.

I have been working on a new WordPress STARFLEET Marine Corps Academy site.  I plan to launch this new site sometime in September.  I don’t have an exact date yet because it will take some time to get everything tested.

The timer is counting down and I’m looking forward to IC this year.  It looks like a great place to hold an IC and there’s no shortage of things to do in New Orleans.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM June 2017

State of INFOCOM June 2017

Greetings Marines,

Thanks to those who submitted their names for the Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck! Extra editor position.  I’m currently reviewing the submissions and hope to make an announcement soon.

My current plan is to deploy the new SFMC WordPress site starting the 1st of July.  I was trying to take Monday as a vacation day but that didn’t work out so I’ll have three days to get everything up and running.  Once the new site is up and functioning correctly we will continue to make improvements to the site as we go.  While we are doing that we will move on to the next site, the SFMC Academy website.  We will also be going with a WordPress site.  More details on that in upcoming reports.

Callsigns on the current website.  I have attempted to update the callsigns on the current website without success.  The site uses an excel php code to display the information from an Excel spread sheet.  It has to be a 2003 version or older excel spreadsheet to work correctly.  Any time I make a change to the sheet and even if I save it as a 2003 spreadsheet it will not display the names.  I have them updated on the new site so instead of spending a lot of time on the current I’m just going to wait and focus on the new site.  Sorry for the delay but I think that is the best course of action for now.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM March 2017

Greetings Marines,

I attended the Region 2 Summit on March the 10th – 12th.  I had a great time seeing and remembering old friends.

I’m still looking for an Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck! Extra editor.  If you are interested in applying for this position, please send me an email with you experience in relation to this position.  I will extend the application until the end of April.

It was reported that there was an issue with the reports being submitted.  I fixed that issue and ran a few successful tests.  There may be a problem with the awards form submissions.  Unlike the error with the reports it seems the award was submitted successfully but it may not have been.  I’m looking into that now.  In the short term, you may want to follow up after the submission to the approving authority just to be on the safe side.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM January 2017

State of INFOCOM January 2017

Greetings Marines,

This being my first report for 2017, Information Command has a busy schedule coming up for the new year.  We will be finishing up the new SFMC WordPress site and then moving on to the SFMCA and QM sites.  With that said I will be needing some additional staff members.  I’m starting with the web team.

If you are interested in applying for the Web Team position, please send me an email with you web design experience.  If you have WordPress experience all the better.  I will be accepting application until the end of February.

With the Region 2 Summit coming up in March, it is a good time to remind everyone that if you know of a Marine that demonstrated their communications skills in service to the Corps in general, or INFOCOM in particular. Such skills may be demonstrated through contributing to SFMC, BDE, or unit publications; creation of superior quality SFMC-oriented websites; or other similar activities.  Please submit them for the Communication Service Award.  I really enjoy reviewing and presenting this award to deserving Marines.

Greetings Marines,

Another year is about to be added to the history books.  Does it seem like the year are getting shorter or is it just me?  Seems the older I get the faster time flies, and I am having fun.  I hope every enjoys the leap second this year, the last minute of 2016 will be 61 seconds long.  I was trying to think of what I could do with the extra second but then just like that it was gone.

As you may have seen in the previous emails I will continue to service the SFMC as COINFOCOM.  It has been my privilege to serve and I look forward to the coming year.  The COINFOCOM staff will have a lot of work to do this year.  Once the SFMC site is completed we will be moving on to the remaining websites and getting them revamped as well.

I will be looking for some new and additional staff members in the January 2017 report.  Be watching for that and if you feel you can assist INFOCOM and the SFMC please feel free to submit your name for consideration.

I hope everyone has safe, and prosperous New year.

Greetings Marines,

I think I have recovered from the turkey coma, if this report doesn’t make sense then maybe not.  I always say I’m not going to overdo it each year then when it’s time to eat that idea goes right out the window.  I did do much better this year when it came to the left overs, gave a lot of that to my daughter to take home.  If it’s not in the house I can’t eat it.

Now that the election is over I would like to congratulate Robert Westfall on being elected the next commander of STARFLEET and Jari James for being selected as the next SFMC Commandant.  I’m looking forward to his administration.

The new SFMC WordPress site is still under construction.  Getting the remaining items setup is taking a bit longer than I thought it would.  I hope to have more information in next month’s report.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday season.
