State of INFOCOM June 2018

Greetings Marines,

Well it’s almost July already.  Another year half way over.  I hope every has a great fourth of July coming up on Wednesday.  Just watch out for the heat and don’t over do it.  I have had a couple of friends in the last couple of weeks who have been out in the heat too long, got dehydrated and got sick from it.  Be careful out there.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

Greetings Marines,

Sorry I missed the report last month.  I turned around and the next thing I know it was half way through May.

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.  I went out of town and visited family.  Even thought we had a storm pass through Florida and Georgia the trip wasn’t bad and I had a great time.  We also took a few minutes to remember those in our family who have served and all of those who didn’t make it home.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

Greetings Marines,

I have a short report this month, so here we go.

I’ve been working on adding a picture archive back to the site.  I’m still looking at the plugin options and testing them out to see which one works best with WordPress.  I’ll keep everyone posted as I make progress.

I also changed the graphic on the start of reports from a combadge to the SFMC anchor.  I think that works better for our reports anyway.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

Greetings Marines,

Sorry to be a day late, I’ve had some personal issues going on and didn’t realize the month was over all ready.  I need to keep my eye on the ball next time.

I have the archives fixed and they are all displaying on the news page correctly now.  When I created the new site and imported the data into the database the posted date was changed to the imported date and not the original date.

I have also added all the issues of the All Hand’s on Deck I had in the library section of the website.  If you have issues that are not there, please send me a copy and I can get them added.

My next item I’ll be working on will be to add the picture archive back to the site.  It wasn’t during the last upgrade several years ago but I’m working on getting them added back and a way new images can be uploaded.  I’ll keep everyone posted as I make progress.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM January 2018

State of INFOCOM January 2018

Greetings Marines,

I deployed the new SFMCA website about a month ago and It’s fully functional.  It is using the new email system like the SFMC site.  We will be making site improvements as we go along.

A word about Yahoo and AOL email addresses.  These seem to be the most difficult to deliver email to and get email from.  Even via Google the email sometimes is still getting rejected by some email providers.  It’s not as bad as in the past coming from Dreamhost but it still happens.  My suggestion is if you have a Yahoo or AOL email address and want to receive email from any of the SFMC websites is to get a free Gmail account.  These seem to be the easiest to work with and the spam filtering is about the best out there.  Not that I’m trying to push Gmail on anyone, it just seems to work better when it comes to getting email from the SFMC websites.

It has been pointed out that all the archives are not displaying on the news page.  I brought over all the reports from the old site that go back several years.  I’ll see if I can get that fixed this weekend.

Also join me in welcoming Captain Robin Fleming onboard as the new attention on deck editor.

We will be talking and coming up with a plan very soon.  I’ll keep everyone posted on any new developments.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM December 2017

Greetings Marines,

Just wanted to send a quick note while it is still 2017.  I’m hoping everyone is having a great and safe holiday season so far and has a happy new year.  It’s only 1 day till 2018, I can’t believe has fast 2017 went by. Seems like I say that every year but it seems truer each year.

I will be deploying the new SFMCA website this weekend and if there are no issues it should be ready to go on January 1st or 2nd.  I will be fully functional and will be using the new email system.  We will be making site improvements after we get the basic site setup.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM November 2017

Greetings Marines,

The new email solutions is in place and I have completed my testing.  The solution to try and route the email through Gmail and avoid the Dream host email servers seems to be working so far.  I’m trying to keep an eye on the reports and I’ll address any issues as they pop up as fast as I can.  If this continues to work as designed, it will be the permanent solution going forward for awards and report delivery.  One other issue I’m working is attachments not being sent when submitting awards.  Because I was focused on getting the report forms ready and the holidays, I have had time to really work on this issue.  That is the next item I’ll be looking into.

Depending on the final results of this reporting period, I will be deploying the new SFMCA website sometime in December or January.  My plan is to deploy the site when COTRACOM shuts down the academy during the holidays.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM October 2017

Greetings Marines,

We had problems once again during the last reporting cycle with reports getting delivered.  The website was generating the reports and sending them.  The issue was the receiver rejected the email because it came from a Dream host email server and it thought it was spam.  Not all email recipients rejected the email, it was the usual suspects like yahoo and AOL.com.  My solution is to try and route the email so it doesn’t look like it is coming from Dream host.  I hope this will improve the delivery results of the reports.  I’m looking into solutions and I’m testing as I can to see which one has the best results.  Moving to the new site5 host may not give us any better results than Dream host so I’m hoping the solution I’m working on is the permanent solution.

I’m going to hold the deployment for the new SFMCA website until I get the email delivery solution working for the reports and awards on the main site before going forward.  No need to replicate our problem on the new SFMCA site.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

Greetings Marines,

I have almost completely recovered from the hurricane.  The last thing to get repaired in my washer. I guess it took a power surge and the main board needs to be replaced.  The good news is it is still under warranty the bad news is, it took over a week to get the replacement part.  I hope to have this resolved by the end of the week.  Fingers crossed.

It never fails, the best laid plans.  I was hoping I would have a decision on the Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck Extra editor position by now but the storm has push that out for a couple more weeks.  I will be making a decision as soon as I can.

The deployment for the new SFMCA website was also delayed.  My testing isn’t completed but once it is, I’ll let everyone know when the new deployment date will be.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.

State of INFOCOM August 2017

Greetings Marines,

I had a great time at IC this year, it was great seeing old friends and meeting some new ones.  My thanks to the organizers and staff of the IC, thanks for your efforts.

Now that the IC is behind us I will be making a decision on the Attention on Deck! /Attention on Deck Extra editor position soon.

As I mentioned at the International Muster, the new SFMC WordPress site it is up and running.  All the data from the old site is on the new site and all functions have been transferred.  We will be making improvements and adding new content to the site as we go along.

I have the new WordPress STARFLEET Marine Corps Academy site ready to deploy.  I plan to launch this new site in September sometime between the 16th-23rd.  I have some final testing to complete before then.  It has been suggested that the SFMCA go with a Moodle site like the SFI Academy has.  As I have the WordPress site ready, this will be the new platform for now.  If at some point TRACOM would like to start developing a new Moodle site I will give them all the assistance I can. The decision will be theirs to make.

After the SFMCA site has been deployed, I will start looking at a new Quarter Master site.  I’m not sure what platform I will use yet.  I will have to do some research and testing before making that decision.

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll get back to
you as soon as I can.
