State of INFOCOM, June 2010
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 16:00
Begin transmission…

Greetings Marines,

Well the "scheduled renovations" that where the result of the incident reported in my last report have been completed and Mr. Hof has settled back into his new and improved office. I must say lessons were learned by all in this incident and things are starting to settle down once again. Of course with summer now here I have a pile of Padds about 3ft high and each one filled with vacation request paper work. So before I get buried I better go through them, but of course before that, my State of INFOCOM report...

New and Current

This section contains stuff that INFOCOM is currently working on that that is new and exciting (well to us it is!).
  1. I would like to thank all those individuals who submitted applications for the position of DCOINFOCOM. I will make an announcement regarding the DCOINFOCOM position on July 1, 2010.
  2. INFOCOM lost two members last month; Dave Lowe anbd Erik Roberts. They both left for their own reasons and I wish them well in their future endeavours.
  3. Some minor changes where made to the report forms on the SFMC site. These changes focused on the Spam filtering the backend performed when forms were submitted and the routing for Battalion and Unit reports.
  4. Here is a repeat of an email I sent to the Corps list earlier this month. I feel that it bears repeating - Report form errors and what to do about them:
    • Misdirected Reports: While not an error this is something I need to address. Some reports are being sent to the wrong BN and/or BDE OICs. This occurs when the wrong routing information in selected in the forms. Before submitting a report it is vitally important that those values are double checked to make sure that the right BN/BDE are selected otherwise the reports don't get to where they are supposed to go.
    • Error Messages: The form back-end uses a very sophisticated system to check to see if the form is being used to send Spam. Before allowing a submission of a completed form the back-end checks several things; 1) Is the submitters IP address on a black list of IP addresses maintained by several anti-spam organizations, 2) Does the content of the form make any sense, 3) Are the required sections of the form filled out and if so are they done so correctly.
      • If the submission fails any one of those checks it kicks the submission back with an error message. These error messages are usually in one of three categories; banned IP address, form failed Spam checks, or required sections not filled out. For banned IP address errors usually that means that a computer has been assigned an IP address that has been associated with spamming. The only way around this is to try and get the ISP to reassign the IP address by disconnecting and then reconnecting. If that doesn't work going to another location to access the form will usually work. For Spam filter check failures that means that some of the text that has been typed into the text areas has tripped those filters. The best way around that is to rewrite the text and try resubmitting the form. For missing info, just fill in the missing info and then resubmit. While the Spam checks are a pain, I'm very reluctant to turn off the anti-spam features because they have been very successful in reducing the amount of spam that has come through the forms to nothing.
    • Form Errors: To report errors with the form, or if the form will still not submit, please contact me directly with the exact nature of the problem, as well as any error message that might have been shown.
  5. Recruiting Videos: These videos will be composed from various footage, and will showcase the SFMC. Mr. Hof has already put a call out for material. For more information regarding the project please contact him directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . To date Mr. Hof has not received a single submission. With convention season upon us and with the IC coming up it would be nice to get some SFMC related video footage so that we can put something together.

  2. General INFOCOM lackey: INFOCOM has a lot of projects going on at once and so needs a few people to help out here and there.
