State of INFOCOM, January 2011

Begin transmission…

Greetings Marines,

There was a rather large New Year's party here at the Data Warfare Center and things got a little out of hand. Shortly after the party a targ was discovered in an office here, but no one seems to know where it came from. So if you know of someone who is missing a pet targ I think that we might have it here. Of course there was a lot of other stuff that happened, but I have been requested not to mention any of that. So on to other topics...

Well as you can see I am still here heading INFOCOM, I was asked to stay on and against my better judgment, agreed. So now I am in the process of moving all my stuff *back* into my office. Even though I have stayed on, a few members of INFOCOM staff have moved to other positions within the Corps; Mr. Hof has resigned as DCOINFOCOM and is now the Research and Development Director for the SFMCA, and Mark Anbinder has gone on to become the next Deputy Commandant. So of course all this shuffling of personnel meant that at the beginning of the year I was once again in need of a new DCO, but more on that later.

Well even though I am staying on from the last General Staff I probably should at the very least introduce myself. So who is your COINFOCOM? Well I am Major General Sean "Cerberus" Niemeyer. I have been in STARFLEET going on 15 years now and a member of the STARFLEET Marine Corps for 14 of those years. In that time I have held various positions at all levels within the Corps, but for the past 3 I have been COINFOCOM. So what do I do here in INFOCOM? Well I oversee the Corps websites, mailing lists, official publications, etc... Basically I oversee the department that is responsible for making sure that the information flows within the Corps. Some days I am more successful than others. I do maintain an open door policy so if any member has questions regarding the SFMC, INFOCOM, etc..., please do not hesitate to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

So what are plans for INFOCOM? Well I've outlined those in the New and Current section of this email. Every month with my State of INFOCOM address I will inform the Corps about new projects, the status of current ones, and any future plans that I may have. This way the Corps knows exactly what INFOCOM is doing.

Now as I mentioned earlier in this email I am in need of a new DCO. Well a few marines did apply for the position and I thank them for their applications. In the end however I can choose only one individual to serve as my DCO. So I would like to congratulate and welcome BDR Michael Timko III as my new DCO. Hopefully he'll be able to replace the revolving door that seems to have been installed on the DCO's office.

New and Current

New and shiny stuff can be found here. Some of this may be interesting, some of it not.
  1. Exploring the feasibility of setting up SFMC forums for those members like to use forums. However unlike other implementations I will be using software to bridge the Corps-l mailing list with the forums so no matter whether or not a member uses the forums or the mailing list everyone will be able to participate. Of course this sort of thing will need some time to set up and some rigorous testing. It may or may not work. I'm hoping that it does so that it opens up yet another avenue for communication.
  2. Exploring setting up a mailing list dedicated to Role-playing. This was a suggestion brought to me by a fellow member and I think that if properly done it could be a lot of fun. Sure it will not be for everyone, but it adds another dimension to the Corps in the way everyone can participate.
  3. Moving the SFMC websites and web infrastructure to its own account. Since I can remember the Corps has always relied on donated web space to maintain its Internet presence. While it doesn't cost the Corps money, there are other inherent risks with that type arrangement. Once the GS has settled in, this project will be first on my plate. I am hoping to accomplish this by the end of February. When the move is made there shouldn't be any downtime, but as with anything Murphy, no relation to Aaron Murphy, might come a calling. I will make several announcements prior to the move.

COINFOCOM
Begin transmission…

Greetings Marines,

Well once again it is the month of October and for the past 3 years there are always some Gremlins that show up and make things a mess. Well this year was no exception. On the morning of October 27, 2010, the Gremlins wormed their way into the Data Warfare Center and ate through the data links, effectively cutting the DWC off from the rest of the world. Luckily the marines around here are now experienced in handling situations such as this, and were able to get the situation under control in about 2 hours. I have petitioned the Federation Counsel on finding the Gremlin homeworld and turning it into a ball of molten rock, but every year my request is denied for some reason. I think they just want to make my life difficult.

**New and Current**
This section contains stuff that INFOCOM is currently working on that that is new and exciting (well to us it is!).

1) SFMC Press Kit/Fliers/Etc.: This is one of those projects that has been placed on hold pending the outcome of the appointment of a new Dant.

2) Recruiting Videos: These videos will be composed from various footage, and will showcase the SFMC. Mr. Hof has already put a call out for material. For more information regarding the project please contact him directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . To date Mr. Hof has received a few submissions, but we need more. It would be nice to get some more SFMC related video footage so that we can put something together.

**SFMC Site Stats**

**Ongoing**
While most of the items listed in this section hardly, if ever, change, they are included just as a reminder of some of the ongoing projects and activities that INFOCOM is involved in. Yes, we do more than get drunk and play ping-pong! Or in the case of my DCO fall asleep underneath either a desk or table.

1)  INFOCOM is publishing the Attention on Deck! Extra. Don't forget to submit your stories and articles too! The AoD!E is totally reliant on submissions from the membership. If you would like to submit an article please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your article and any images/photos you would like to have included. Just as a reminder, please proofread and check for spelling and grammar mistakes before submitting an article.

2) Standard maintenance on the SFMC and SFMCA websites continues. If you notice anything amiss please do  not hesitate to contact me.

**The Future**
This section contains items that are on the road map for release at some future date or are just pipe dreams. But hey even pipes have to dream!

Ok since every form of divination has failed, I've decided to just sit back and wait and see what happens. Once the election is over and the disposition of the current GS is decided, then I'll start laying out more projects for the future. No use in starting something now and find out that I won't be able to carry out through fruition.

**Staffing**
Staff, volunteers, victims...they are all the same. Unless they are zombies. In that case I need a heavy caliber weapon and a lot of ammo. Actually I heard that Sears has some cool shopping for zombies (http://www.sears.com/zombies)

1) PHP/Javascript/Flash Developer: INFOCOM is once looking for a PHP/Javascript/Flash developer for  various projects. Applicants must have knowledge of PHP, Javascript, or Flash, and HTML. If interested
please forward a copy of a STARFLEET and real world resume and if possible any examples of  prior work  to COINFOCOM.

Please note that the site, newsletter, video/audio must be related to the SFMC in some way. Another way to get this award is to completely rebuild the wireless network at the hotel where the IC is being held...during the IC.

**SFMC Calendar of Events**
Did you know the SFMC site has a calendar of events? To access it just click on the link in the Knowledge base. Also on the pages of the site and to the left there is a mini-calendar that shows which days are important in the SFMC and right below that is a listing of the next 3 upcoming events. If you would like to have your SFMC related events listed on the calendar just email me with the information.

**Need help with your groups website?**
If there is any Unit, Battalion, or Brigade that needs help in setting up a website or fixing one please feel free to contact me and I'll be more than happy to see what I can do to help. Be sure to have an idea as to some of the site basics (what information is to be on the site, what you want the site to do  for you, etc...) as it will help me help you.

**SFMC Quartermaster Store**
Did you know the SFMC QM has a website of its own? Well it is more than just a website, it is also a  fully functional online store! So if you need some SFMC ribbons to complete your rack head to http://qm.sfi-sfmc.org and purchase them today.
