Begin transmission…

Greetings Marines,

Well supposedly that bloody rodent in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania didn't see his shadow this year. Supposedly that means an early spring, however looking outside my window here at the Data Warfare Center it doesn't look like it. Never mind the fact that one day it is 32 degrees and snowing with 8 inches on the ground and then the next it is 61 degrees outside with the sun beating down. I really need to talk to the weather service about setting up some good weather around here.

Turning my attention from outside to inside. My new DCO has informed me that as part of his renovations of the DCO's office he has removed the revolving door that somehow was installed at some point. So hopefully I'll be able to keep this DCO around for a little longer than the year that my past DCOs have lasted. My new DCO is fitting in and doing well in his new role. Now as always the marines around here like to have fun during the holidays. So with Saint Patrick's day around the corner, the Data Warfare Center has been decked out with shamrocks and other festive decorations. The DWC isn't such a bad place to work..

New and Current

New and shiny stuff can be found here. Some of this may be interesting, some of it not.
  1. I have begun work in setting up the dedicated Role-playing mailing list that I mentioned in my last months report. Well actually the marine who suggested it to me has started drafting the necessary documents to get the ball rolling. Once those documents are finished and approved the next step will be to set up the list and make it live. Look for this to happen at the end of March or sometime in April.
  2. I have researched moving the SFMC web infrastrcuture to its own account. I will be presenting my report to the Dant in the next week or so. I will then release my report in my March 2011 report.

Begin transmission…

Greetings Marines,

Well once again it is the month of October and for the past 3 years there are always some Gremlins that show up and make things a mess. Well this year was no exception. On the morning of October 27, 2010, the Gremlins wormed their way into the Data Warfare Center and ate through the data links, effectively cutting the DWC off from the rest of the world. Luckily the marines around here are now experienced in handling situations such as this, and were able to get the situation under control in about 2 hours. I have petitioned the Federation Counsel on finding the Gremlin homeworld and turning it into a ball of molten rock, but every year my request is denied for some reason. I think they just want to make my life difficult.

**New and Current**
This section contains stuff that INFOCOM is currently working on that that is new and exciting (well to us it is!).

1) SFMC Press Kit/Fliers/Etc.: This is one of those projects that has been placed on hold pending the outcome of the appointment of a new Dant.

2) Recruiting Videos: These videos will be composed from various footage, and will showcase the SFMC. Mr. Hof has already put a call out for material. For more information regarding the project please contact him directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . To date Mr. Hof has received a few submissions, but we need more. It would be nice to get some more SFMC related video footage so that we can put something together.

**SFMC Site Stats**
This section contains some interesting stats for the SFMC sites. These stats are compiled from PingDom.com and Google Analytics. Just remember that Google knows and sees all.

All stats below are for the period of September 1, 2010 to September 31, 2010

1) Server Uptime: There were a total of 1 outages translating to 1h 15m 1s of downtime. This translates  to a 99.83% up-time for the month of September.

2) Visitors: 1,436 visitors viewing a total of 17,165 pages spending an average time of 3m 26s on the  site.

3) Top 5 Countries visiting: Unites States (1,231), United Kingdom (41), New Zealand (32), Canada (24), Puerto Rico (18),  Australia (18)

4) Top 3 Browsers: IE 8, FF, Chrome

**Ongoing**
While most of the items listed in this section hardly, if ever, change, they are included just as a reminder of some of the ongoing projects and activities that INFOCOM is involved in. Yes, we do more than get drunk and play ping-pong! Or in the case of my DCO fall asleep underneath either a desk or table.

1)  INFOCOM is publishing the Attention on Deck! Extra. Don't forget to submit your stories and articles too! The AoD!E is totally reliant on submissions from the membership. If you would like to submit an article please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your article and any images/photos you would like to have included. Just as a reminder, please proofread and check for spelling and grammar mistakes before submitting an article.

2) Standard maintenance on the SFMC and SFMCA websites continues. If you notice anything amiss please do  not hesitate to contact me.

**The Future**
This section contains items that are on the road map for release at some future date or are just pipe dreams. But hey even pipes have to dream!

Ok since every form of divination has failed, I've decided to just sit back and wait and see what happens. Once the election is over and the disposition of the current GS is decided, then I'll start laying out more projects for the future. No use in starting something now and find out that I won't be able to carry out through fruition.

**Staffing**
Staff, volunteers, victims...they are all the same. Unless they are zombies. In that case I need a heavy caliber weapon and a lot of ammo. Actually I heard that Sears has some cool shopping for zombies (http://www.sears.com/zombies)

1) PHP/Javascript/Flash Developer: INFOCOM is once looking for a PHP/Javascript/Flash developer for  various projects. Applicants must have knowledge of PHP, Javascript, or Flash, and HTML. If interested
please forward a copy of a STARFLEET and real world resume and if possible any examples of  prior work  to COINFOCOM.

Please note that the site, newsletter, video/audio must be related to the SFMC in some way. Another way to get this award is to completely rebuild the wireless network at the hotel where the IC is being held...during the IC.

**SFMC Calendar of Events**
Did you know the SFMC site has a calendar of events? To access it just click on the link in the Knowledge base. Also on the pages of the site and to the left there is a mini-calendar that shows which days are important in the SFMC and right below that is a listing of the next 3 upcoming events. If you would like to have your SFMC related events listed on the calendar just email me with the information.

**Need help with your groups website?**
If there is any Unit, Battalion, or Brigade that needs help in setting up a website or fixing one please feel free to contact me and I'll be more than happy to see what I can do to help. Be sure to have an idea as to some of the site basics (what information is to be on the site, what you want the site to do  for you, etc...) as it will help me help you.

**SFMC Quartermaster Store**
Did you know the SFMC QM has a website of its own? Well it is more than just a website, it is also a  fully functional online store! So if you need some SFMC ribbons to complete your rack head to http://qm.sfi-sfmc.org and purchase them today.
