State of INFOCOM, June 2011
Friday, 24 June 2011 13:01

Greetings all,

Well once again it is time for the INFOCOM report and once again I am going to jump right in. This time I am going to talk about the report forms. The report forms on the web site have always been an issue, even before I took over as COINFOCOM. Of course when I moved the SFMC site over to Joomla I tried my best to create a series of forms that were not only compatible with Joomla, but also emulated as closely as possible the function of the old forms. This was not an easy thing to do and for the most part the forms work as before there are some things that needed to be changes in order for the forms to work properly or features that had to be dropped because they were not supported by the software that was being used. The end result is what is currently on the SFMC and SFMCA sites. Of course the ultimate goal is to move the reporting into the SFI DB, which would allow for more features, such as auto-population in real-time thus eliminating cut and pasting. However there is no ETA on when that will be as the next version of the SFI DB is being planned out.

In the mean time I am going to address several comments that have made their way up to me. The first regards auto-population and adding that feature to the forms. While auto-population would greatly cut down on the time needed to fill out the forms, this feature will not be added. The reason is that the form software that the SFMC sites use do not support this feature, in fact none of the form software I tried supported auto-population. Another comment regards the need to select the BDE and BN twice on some forms. This is one of those things that needed to be done in order to get the forms working as they had before. It is a work around so that the forms get to where they need to go. The routing section accomplishes this and the other section sets the text for the appropriate sections of the form. I'm going to be looking at ways to simplify this but I cannot promise anything. A third comment that was passed up was a request to add a section for SFMCA courses taken. This section is really unnecessary as TRACOM already tracks this information in real-time and acts on that information accordingly. So adding this section would serve no real purpose.

Now onto some other stuff...

Awards
Add another ribbon to your fruit salad. Impress your friends! Get the Girl! (Please note results may vary). Of course adding another ribbon may mean you need to acquire a bigger rack (get your mind out of the gutter).

Do you or someone you know publish a newsletter or some other SFMC related literature or media (audio/visual)? Do you or someone you know design and create SFMC related websites? If you do then why not nominate that marine for the communications Achievement Award? To nominate a marine for the award just go here: http://bit.ly/cEQhPV (takes you directly to the award form). Please note that the site, newsletter, video/audio must be related to the SFMC in some way. Another way to get this award is to completely rebuild the wireless network at the hotel where the IC is being held...during the IC.
