CORPS-L operates under the authority of the STARFLEET Marine Corps, and of the list owner and moderator(s). CORPS-L is owned and operated by the SFMC Information Command (INFOCOM), and is administered by COINFOCOM and his designees.

A. Subscription instructions
To subscribe or unsubscribe to CORPS-L, visit the following website:
http://lists.sfi-sfmc.org/listinfo.cgi/corps-l-sfi-sfmc.org

Enter your E-mail address in the box under Subscribing to Corps-l, and enter a password, decide if you would like regular mail delivery, or digest mode (if you would like digest mode, then click the radio button next to Yes), and click subscribe. You will then be e-mailed a confirmation code. Follow the directions in the Confirmation E-mail to finish subscribing to the list.

PLEASE try and post under the address you are subscribed too. You can subscribe more than one email address (just ensure that your secondary addresses do not receive mail, otherwise, you will end up with duplicate posts.) If you have any problems, write to Sean at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

B. Contact information
The CORPS-L list owner is Sean Niemeyer, the current COINFOCOM. The list moderator is Sean Niemeyer and Dave Lowe. Your first contact for most issues or questions regarding the list should always be Sean at

C. Purpose

The CORPS-L mailing list is the official mailing list that allows members who are in good standing of both STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc. (STARFLEET) and of the STARFLEET Marine Corps (SFMC) to more easily exchange ideas and information about issues affecting STARFLEET, the STARFLEET Marine Corps and STARFLEET members in general. CORPS-L operates under the authority of the STARFLEET Marine Corps, and of the list owner and moderator(s).

Announcements of upcoming chapter, Region, MSG, Battalion, and/or Brigade events are absolutely welcome, as well as discussion about issues facing chapters, regions, MSGs, Batallions, Brigades or individual members. Messages of thanks or praise are appreciated; messages of complaint are not, though constructive criticism will often be welcomed by individuals or SFMC departments when e-mailed directly.

The authority of the list owner and moderators on CORPS-L is absolute; THE LIST IS NOT A DEMOCRACY. You are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines set forth in this FAQ and to requests made by  the moderator on the list itself. Membership to Corps-L is *NOT* a right. Failing to abide by the guidelines in this FAQ will be met with a warning, suspension, or expulsion, depending on the severity or frequency of the problem, at the list administrations discretion. Continued violations of these rules, or of requests of the list admin will result in moderation or suspension.

D. How to post

To post a message to CORPS-L:

Send e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thats the short form.

Here are other considerations:

Try to use a meaningful subject line. Try and use a descriptive subject such as "How tall is Wade Olson?" or "7th Brigade Muster this November." Any off topic posts should have a subject line that begins with "OT:".

You should sign each post to CORPS-L with, at a minimum, your name and e-mail address. Try to keep signature blocks around five or six lines.

This is a closed list, so you can only post from the e-mail address at which you are subscribed. Posts from any other address will fall into the "bounce" mailbox for the admins/mods to approve. If the admins/mods do not recognize your name, they won't approve it and will be sent back, or deleted. Save everyone the time and trouble: post a message under the address you are subscribed under!

Do not use styled text on CORPS-L. Not every member of the list uses a mail client that can see the stylized text, and your message will be garbled to them. If you do not know how to turn off styled text in your mail client, please ask us for help. We have FAQs available upon request for a variety of popular mail clients. This includes posting in HTML.

File attachments are absolutely forbidden on CORPS-L. This includes embedded pictures in you signature, as well as the business cards that some E-mail clients include. Its fine to offer the availability of a file to those who reply privately that they'd like a copy sent individually, but files are *NOT* to be sent to the list.

E. To post or not to post
Think before you post to the list. You are about to share your words with hundreds of people. If you are mad when you write your message, hold onto it for a few hours before posting, and then look at it again. You may discover you need to reword it... or just delete it unsent.

Check the section on "What not to do" for additional guidelines.

F. Replies, follow-ups, quoting
Think before you post a follow-up message. Does the list need to see your reply, or should it go only to the one person who posted the message to which you are replying?

Follow-up messages of condolences, congratulations, thanks, get-well wishes, and the like should be sent privately.

If you decide to send a private reply, please carefully check to make sure your message is addressed only to that persons private e-mail address, not to the list.

If you are going to send a follow-up post to the list, quote the message to which you are replying, but do so sparingly.

G. Archives and FAQ
Digests of the CORPS-L mailing list are available on the list server site at http://lists.sfi-sfmc.org/listinfo.cgi/corps-l-sfi-sfmc.org .

The current CORPS-L ListFAQ is always available at

H. When things go wrong

If you believe there is something wrong with the CORPS-L mailing list, DO NOT under any circumstances post a message to the list expressing your concern. If there is actually something wrong, your post may exacerbate the problem, and at best will be ineffective at solving it. Instead contact the list's administrators whose direct e-mail addresses are available in the section "Contact information."

If theres nothing wrong with the mailing list, but you have a complaint about something that someone has posted, please direct your comments to the list moderators. Most of CORPS-Ls moderation activity goes on behind the scenes, via private messages among the moderators and those who have done something wrong. Its possible that the moderators have already dealt with the issue you feel is worth a complaint, but its also possible that they have not, so your comments, worded politely and in private, are always welcome.

Please consider unsubscribing from CORPS-L if you know in advance that your e-mail address is going to become unreachable, either permanently, or for a short period of time. If messages to you bounce repeatedly, you will be automatically unsubscribed from the list without prior notice.

To unsubscribe from the list write This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it a message whose Subject says UNSUBSCRIBE.
Or you can go here http://lists.sfi-sfmc.org/listinfo.cgi/corps-l-sfi-sfmc.org and at the bottom of the page is an area where a subscriber can manager their subscription.

J. What *NOT* to do
If you have any questions, or are not sure whether something you are about to post violates the guidelines, by all means ask. Note that the following is not an exhaustive list of rules, and are subject to change at any time by the list admins.
  • No flames or other acts that disrupt the even flow of discussion on the list.
  • No profanity. There are minors on the list, so act accordingly.Decisions as to what constitutes profanity shall be made by the List Admin.
  • No forwarding private mail. This is absolute! Messages sent to you privately are not to be shared with the list and/or made public without the permission of the author. The same applies for messages from limited-access mailing lists.
  • No forwarding messages to the list for non-subscribers. If someone asks you to share their thoughts with the list, ask them to contact a list moderator. We'll post their message for them if we think its appropriate.
  • No posting copyrighted material without permission. This includes newspaper/website articles. If you ask, you may find that the newspaper or writer is happy to have you share the material. Ask. Links to stories are always welcome.
  • No excessive quoting. Really make an effort to trim those quotes, Marines! Quote four or five lines of the post you are replying to. If you have more than on point to answer, then of course you may quote the relevant lines for that point also. Do NOT quote the previous post in full, either at the beginning or end of your post. Those members that subscribe to the digest version of this list will thank you.
  • No unmarked spoilers. Provide spoiler warnings in subject line, and 20 lines of space before your text, if your post contains info that could be considered a spoiler. Failure to follow this will result in the offender being strapped to a chair and forced to watch "Meet the Feebles" until they are a quivering pile of goo.
  • Limit congratulations messages to the list. These should be sent privately, with the e-mail contact for the person sent in the original post. This also holds for condolence e-mails.
  • No chain letters. A chain letter is any message that urges you to pass it along to others; this includes virus warnings, consumer product warnings, etc... If in doubt, please contact the list admin for clarification.
  • No test messages. If the operation of the list needs to be tested for some reason, one of the list admins or moderators will do so. If you feel there's a problem we do not know about, please let us know via private e-mail.
  • No advertising or sales pitches, whether to promote something that would benefit you, a friend, or an unrelated ompany. We make exceptions for chapter fundraisers and the like, but please ask for permission before posting such messages.
  • No "me too" posts. Do not bother posting a reply to the list unless you have something to add to the discussion.
  • No unauthorized personal paging. If you have a need to page someone, please contact the list admin for approval.
  • Limit signature blocks to six lines, including all information, decorations, quotations, and blank lines.
  • Do not post replies to the list when your message is meant for just the original poster. Send them privately.
  • No attached files (images, documents, etc...), styled text, and/or HTML encoding.
  • Criticism of the way the list is being run, including suggestions on what the List Admins/Mods should or should not do. Suggestions are welcome, but are to be done in private.
  • No polls of any kind, unless approved beforehand by COINFOCOM.
K. What did we miss?
