State of INFOCOM, January 2010

Begin transmission…

Greetings Marines,

Someone, yet again, has been playing with the planetary climate control equipment. One day it is a balmy 60 degrees F and then the next day the thermometer barely registers 30 degrees F and on top of it there are 6 inches of snow on the ground. Needless to say that this is wreaking havoc with the environmental controls in the building (I swear I saw penguins moving into one of the offices!) and everyone’s sinuses. Let me tell you there is nothing worse than a Klingon with sinus problems. I mean have you ever heard a Klingon blow is nose? It reverberates throughout the entire building, and the Data Warfare Center is a big building. So for me Groundhog Day couldn't come soon enough. I'm really hoping that he doesn't see his shadow and winter ends just a little sooner. Maybe when it’s a little warmer the marines around here will feel a little better. But then again Groundhog Day has never really been the same since the groundhog was replaced by a robot.

Also with Valentine's Day fast approaching I just want to remind all personnel that the giving and receiving of Tribbles is not recommended and on some planets forbidden. Sure they may be cute, cuddly, and purr (unless you are a Klingon), but once fed you'll soon find yourself up to your eyeballs in Tribbles. So remember, save a planet/ecosystem, friends don't let friends give Tribbles as presents.

New and Current

This section contains stuff that INFOCOM is currently working on that that is new and exciting (well to us it is!).

  1. New SFMC site: I am currently working on a new SFMC site and have about 99% of it done. Right now the site is in beta with some testers and is undergoing tweaking. I anticipate that the site will go live within the next two weeks.
  2. Recruiting Videos: These videos will be composed from various footage, and will showcase the SFMC. Mr. Hof has already put a call out for material. For more information regarding the project please contact him directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Ongoing
While most of the items listed in this section hardly, if ever, change, they are included just as a reminder of some of the ongoing projects and activities that INFOCOM is involved in. Yes, we do more than get drunk and play ping-pong!

  1. INFOCOM is publishing the Attention on Deck! Extra. We would like to hear from you about how we are doing. Also don't forget to submit your stories and articles too! The AoD!E is totally reliant on submissions from the membership. If you would like to tell us how we are doing or would like to submit an article please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Also from time to time the AoD!E staff may call for articles pertaining to certain subjects. Keep an eye on this the Corps-l list for those announcements.
  2. Standard maintenance on the SFMC and SFMCA websites continues. If you notice anything amiss please do not hesitate to contact me. I usually strive to fix any errors within 24 hours of them bring brought to my attention.
  3. SFMC Manual CDs are available from the SFMC QM store. All orders for CDs are forwarded to me once payment is received by the QM. Once I receive confirmation of payment I burn and ship them out from my location. Please allow 1 to 2 weeks for delivery.
The Future
This section contains items that are on the roadmap for release at some future date or are just pipe dreams. But hey even pipes have to dream!

  1. SFMCA Site: The SFMCA site is going to be overhauled and updated soon after the SFMC site goes live.
  2. SFMC Press Kit/Fliers/Etc.: Slated for later in 2010 this project entails the creation of a SFMC Press Kit and other promotional material.
  3. A Visual History of the SFMC: This will be a compilation of various still photos covering the entire history of the SFMC.
  4. Recruiting Powerpoint Presentation: This presentation will outline who we are and what we do.
Staffing
Staff, volunteers, victims...they are all the same.

  1. I would like to welcome Brigadier General Gary Hollifield, Jr. to the INFOCOM staff. He has volunteered to help out with the Attention on Deck! Extra in various capacities.
  2. Victi....Volunteers are always welcome. If you have experience in programming, Joomla!, video editing, publications,  graphics, etc..., please send your SFMC resume and a small portfolio of your work to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Awards
Do you or someone you know publish a newsletter or some other SFMC related literature or media (audio/visual)? Do you or someone you know design and create SFMC related websites? If you do then why not nominate that marine for the Communications Achievement Award? To nominate a marine for the award just go here: http://bit.ly/2Y7pk8 (takes you directly to the award form). Please note that the site, newsletter, video/audio must be related to the SFMC in some way.

SFMC Quartermaster Store
Did you know the SFMC QM has a website of its own? Well it is more than just a website, it is also a fully functional online store! So if you need some SFMC ribbons to complete your rack head to http://qm.sfi-sfmc.org and purchase them  today.

The SFMC Quartermaster also has a Spreadshirt store. That store can be accessed right through the SFMC website under the "Stores" menu item.
